Expert summary
Israel, or the State of Israel, is a small country in Western Asia on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt. Of the population of about 7.28 million, the vast majority are Jews. It is the only Jewish state in the world. However, there are also Arab Muslims, Christians, Druze, and Samaritans in Israel. It has its roots in the Land of Israel, a concept central to Judaism for 3000 years. In 1947, the United Nations approved the partition of Palestine into two states, one Jewish and the other Arab. The state of Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948. It has been in war ever since with neighboring Arab countries.
